Time & Tide Wait For No Man Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Time & tide wait for no man and we've combined them in a new timepiece from Nixon to make sure we're not too late for either one.  A few minor problems:  1.  It doesn't exactly tell you how high or low the tide is.  If you could read the 4pt. type, you might be able to count the dots on the way up the scale, which maxes out at 8' and goes down to a minus 3'.  2.  Although the vertical bar is ostensibly the "time" axis, it has a negative to positive reading with the bar at "0."  Just by glancing, one might think  that it suggested "plus" and "minus" tides, but instead it appears to tell you how much time you have until the next tide or by how much you missed the previous tide.  3.  Every so often, we bend our wrist enough to change the mode to "Tide," in which case the time function is now at the upper right and you have the flashing numerical tide equivalents below the display.  You have to scan the dial to see how long you've been held under.  4.  You have a bunch of different tidal areas to choose from, the closest to us being Santa Monica.  That's okay.  But there are basically two tidal computations that we use.  One is the National Weather Service report and that's the one on most of the sine curve and numerical calendars.  Then there are the Navy Navigational Tides.  They're the ones they use in navigating (duh!)  They're off from the NWS by a few minutes or even more than a few, but usually read the same height.  The only time this is a problem is when someone says:  "What time is high tide?" and you say, "9:08."  And then they say, "Gee, I thought it was at 8:58!"  Then, if they persist, you have to explain OR you have to ask them, why they asked to begin with, if they already knew...

Overcast skies this morning and 12 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the WNW by 3.4kts and the sea surface was rippled.  The air temperature was 65.1° and the water was 66.0°, but felt a tad warmer than yesterday's same number.  High tide at 8:58am +3.7' and low tide will be at 1:26pm +2.2'.  There's a 198° swell out of the SSW, showing 3.9'.  We're getting enough of it to have 3' to 4' waves with some nice high tide peaks.  Had to use your patience to good advantage...

Palindromes Strike A Note:
My favorite palindrome:

How about: Oh no, Don Ho.  Or: Was it a cat I saw?
Mike G

Klaatu birata nikto....
not a palindrome, just riffing...
Keeks
(Thanks!  We needed that...  Ed.)

Then, we have this guy Bruce, who is leaving signs all over west Redondo.  First of all he says "Emily?"  Like he isn't even sure of her name.  Sounds like Emily, maybe Gremily or Enemy?  What's this, "Once upon a castle." ??  It's "Once upon a time..."  Maybe he's got our tide watch and thought that was a castle and not high tide?  Maybe he stormed the battlements and got hot oil poured on him?  "Still under the spell of your kiss"  Do we know of any good spells?  We're thinking he wants to find her and change back after turning into a chicken every time a bus goes by.  How many Emily's do you think have called Bruce?  How many other names do you think have called him, pretending to be Emily?  Dammit Bruce...

Finally, someone left a orange bowl at the Professor's Linguiça Feed and LoLa is making him wear it as a hat until he finds the owner.  Of course, no one will want it back after he's worn it as a hat...
