Floating Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Not easy to see, but in photo #1 we have a few hearty souls braving the outfall and ensuing bacterial infestation that comes with the first rain.  We looked at it, weighed the obvious variables (water color, warning signs, size of the surf and quality of the waves) and decided we'd give it a bye.  It actually got better as the morning progressed...

A gorgeous Southern California fall day.  Sunny and 22 miles visibility, with a light offshore breeze at 1.3kts.  The sea surface was smooth, sporting a light roll.  The air temp was 52.9° and the water was 60.8°, although it felt warmer than that in the surf.  High tide was at 7:42am +4.9' and low tide will follow at 1:32pm +1.7'.  The 46221 buoy is reading a SSW swell out of 206° at 4.6'.  It seems to be diminishing, but the surf was in the 3' to 5' range all morning...

Photo #2, has James Wheatley checking out this two-toned job.  It's not air brushed, that's actually tinted foam!  He said when you get through shaping one of these the entire bay is pink.  Next time, it might be a better idea to start with the pink side and then everything would look gray.  Unless you like pink...  Hey, that's okay too...  Finally we have this super-light chip from Stavros.  We were holding it up to the light to see the chambered foam.  Lots of questions about the efficacy of this design:  How sturdy is the final product?  Do you have to use heavier glass?  (Canceling out any weight advantage)  Is it too corky/light?  Will the TSA stop you every time you go to the airport to see what the chambers are carrying?  (We remember back in the late 60's when Aussy, Dick VanStralen, put ping-pong balls in some of his boards.  We were at the Honolulu airport and the cops (long before the TSA) had bright lights that they would shine against your board to see if you were trying to smuggle something inside.  When they saw all these compartments in this guys board, they were sure they had found a mother-lode of drugs.  The surfer argued in vain that they were ping-pong balls for lightness and flotation.  They whipped out a skill saw and cut that thing in half!  They looked and said, "Whoa - it's ping-pong balls!"  Then they handed the guy the two pieces.  He looks at them and says, "What the hell am I supposed to do with these!?"  The cop in charge looks at him and says, "Glue it back together!"   ✠
