Sensitive Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Do they really wear those wooden shoes?  Well, the simple answer is, "Yes, they do, but these days there are alternatives."  Turns out that things can get pretty damp and muddy out in the fields and wooden shoes seem to handle the wet and muck better than most ordinary shoes.  In photo #1 you can see them drying on the fence...

Overcast this morning with 5 miles visibility.  Winds were light out of the SW by 3.0kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 65.0 and the water is 69.6.  High tide was at 5:56am +3.0' and low tide will be at 10:51am +2.1'.  We have a SSW swell out of 196º at 2' with the tide floating things out of control...

Do they really have dikes?  Of course they do, otherwise the whole country would look like San Francisco Bay.  On the left of pic #2 you can see folks riding their bikes.  Our GPS told us that the bike path was -10' below sea level!  The top of the dike was +10'.  The ocean here (on the right) is the Zuider Zee, which means "Southern Sea" in Dutch.  It's actually a shallow bay on the North Sea that was cut off by means of levies and dikes.  In the old days they used windmills (#3) to pump the water out of the bottom land back into the sea.  Today they have kick-ass pumps but they keep some of the more picturesque windmills around as tourist attractions.  We were attracted by this one...

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a few of the boys carrying on here for the camera on the 4th of July.  On the left is the legendary Keoni Boyd, who glasses, repairs and shapes for Aquatech in the old Greg Noll building.  In the middle is the Professor, who looks like Keoni's cousin Darell.  On the right is Ché Barahona pointing the fickle finger of fate at Mr. Boyd...
