Thinking Back Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Genevieve Carlisle.  A great surfer girl of the 40's, she also happened to be Montana born, an alumna of the University of Chicago, worked on the Manhattan Project, owned a couple of businesses, raised a family of three wacky girls, was a bridge whiz, a credible sailor, pirate, tennis player and long-suffering mother-in-law.  Services will be Tuesday the 19th at St. Lawrence Martyr Church in Redondo Beach at 7:00pm with a reception to follow.  Always a staunch environmental advocate, in lieu of flowers the family is suggesting that a donation can be made to "Heal the Bay" in her name.

Overcast this morning with 7 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the NW by 1.1kts and the sea surface had a rather gooey-ugly film of oil, which ameliorated the chop and has obviated the need for hair tonic for the next couple of days.  The air temperature was 63.8 and the water is 69.4.  Low tide was at 9:57am +1.8' and high tide will be at 5:07pm +4.7'.  We have a 3.9' swell out of the SSW 203º and it was 3' with an inside out shorebreak that looked board-breakingly cruel...

Amsterdam has to be the Museum capital of Europe, maybe the world.  Photo #2 is the Bril Museum gift shop window.  This museum is dedicated to eyeglasses.  Why?  Well maybe because in Holland Cornelius Drebbel invented the modern microscope and Anton Van Leeuwenhoek made some spectacular advances in microscopy as a scientific tool.  Then there's the purse museum, yes, the purse museum.  They have purses on display going beck to the middle ages (when they were primarily worn by men.)  This shark number goes to show how the craft has advanced since a simple drawstring bag in the 1100's...
