Almost A Win Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

In an action packed surf contest this morning Redondo vied with Mira Costa for the Bay League title.  Redondo took off to an early lead and then in the third heat the Costa girls went 1-2-3 and we were suddenly 7 points behind.  The men's longboard had Redondo's Ryan Hughes edging out Tate Curran for first place and now Redondo was 2 points behind.  Lately bodyboarding has seemed to take a back seat in the competitions, but it was critical in this contest.  Kyle Beatty with a couple of  signature moves and a new haircut got first and Redondo was now 1 point behind.  It was the girls turn again, but one thing you don't want to do is make Emma Waldinger mad.  The Costa girls did their level best, but they couldn't get around Emma and she got first with a long left that had the crowd on their feet.  But Costa got 2-3-4 meaning that they actually outscored the girls by 3 points.  Going into the 7th heat it was Redondo's turn to go 2-3-4 and now only 1 point separated the two teams.  Redondo has a crop of talented freshman and it was Ben Oien who nailed first place with powerful confident surfing.  Carlos Price was a strong third and even though he got sixth, Ethan Rodgers surfed a smart heat and managed to disrupt things enough to let his teammates do their best.  No one left the beach as the head judge tabulated the results and for the first time in our memory it was a TIE!  Both teams will share the league championship and it was the first time in 9 years that Mira Costa had not won outright.  Even though both teams felt a tad deflated, it was a great contest and a testimony to the talent on both squads.

Morning started out foggy and then cleared until the last heat of the contest when the wind changed and blew the haze back across the beach and roughed up the waves.  Initially winds were out of the NE by 2.9kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 51.3 and the water was 58.6.  Low tide was at 5:57am +1.4' and high tide was at 11:43am +4.0'.  We had a 2.0' swell out of the west at 248º and it was 2' to 3'...

In Nicaragua Joey and Suzanne (#1) were both the entertainment and the accompaniment.  Jen Capo, the organizer of the "Life Aquatic" story sessions held some impromptu story slams between surf sessions.  Like always, everyone had a story...

(#2) Christian and Morgan share the last wave of the day at the beach break in front of the camp.

Late at night at Layla's (#3) in Nashville, Boomfwappa and the Professor contemplate making their dash across the country.  But not before Layla bought us a drink and introduced us to the band which were all one family.  Mom is on the guitar on the left...

Still no Plan B.  Happy hour remains scheduled for Samba at 5:30.
