April Showers Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

"Rain, rain, soak the turf,
all the Lost Boys want to surf."
We made that up all by ourselves...  No, really...  And come on, what else rhymes with "surf?"

So, photo #1 is from a couple of days ago when the wind was playing hell redistributing the sand.  Now, in our imaginations we picture that this is exactly what's happening to the sand bars under the water as well.  And if you saw the surf yesterday, it kinda makes sense...

A guy asked us this morning if it had ever rained in April before?  We immediately said, "Well hell, of course it's rained in April before!  How long have you lived here?"  He said he'd been in Hermosa going on 3 years.  "Hmmm, probably hasn't rained in April in the last three years..."  But it rained this morning!  Visibility was 5 miles and it was cloudy.  Winds were onshore from 5 to 8kts and the sea surface was choppy.  The air temp was 49.3 and the sea temps are around 55/56.  Low tide was at 6:36am -0.5' and high tide follows at 1:05pm +3.5'.  We have a WSW swell out of 251º at 4.3' and it's blown down to 1' to 3'...

Back on Isla Santa Cruz, our host Yogo took us to Las Tortugas to catch a few waves (#2).  You have to be determined to surf Tortugas because the walk is about 45 minutes and it gets pretty wax melting hot out there(#3.)  We were able to find this 6'10" board (#4) at one of the surf/dive shops.  Not much in the way of selection.  The surf was kinda big, with faces in the 6' to 8' range and the paddle out was a bit of a slog because of the consistency of the waves.  But we got our quota and then moved down to the west side of the bay and got a couple more of these loping rights...  We would suggest that if you want to visit the Galapagos you seriously consider bringing your board.  There's surf and it's worth the effort...

Happy hour will be at "Waterman's Safe House."  We're guessing they call it a "safe house" because you can go there and hide if your significant other is pissed that you spent too much time in the water!  5:30 and we'll try for the patio...

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it"
The Professor!!
