Lost Boys & Co...

Here's LoLa getting ready to set sail from Floreana (#1).  She was accompanied by some of the local fauna that followed her to the dock, including a couple of seals and a grip of iguanas...

Yeah, it's still windy.  So windy that we watched a guy jump in the water next to the Hermosa pier, get blown to the Breakwater, across the King Harbor parking lot, through the yacht club, across the harbor, ping-pong through the Horseshoe Pier and we lost sight of him before he hit the jetty at Topaz...  In other words visibility was about 7 miles.  13 to 15kt winds and plenty of white caps.  The air temperature was 50.0 and the water has dropped a couple of degrees more to 55.6.  Low tide was at 4:56am -0.5' and high tide will be at 11:08am +4.3'.  We have a 4.9' west swell out of 260º and it was 3' to 5' at most spots...

The dock on Floreana is a pretty simple affair (#2) unless the surf is pumping.  When that happens you wait until the boat gets to the level of the stair you're standing on and then you step onto the boat.  This morning a rain storm had just passed through and things were looking bright and sharp (note all of the red crabs on the rocks in the foreground)...

There certainly was surf on Floreana, but it was fickle.  It's always hard when you're traveling, since finding swell, tide and weather conditions in alignment isn't easy.  But we could tell that at some spots, like the reef in front of our bungalow, had the possibility of a good wave.  Here's a little peeler (#3) we saw on the last day...

Then as fate would have it, we're on the dock waiting for our launch and we're staring at this 3'-4' wave in the middle of the bay only yards from where we stood.  A kid comes running out of town and paddles into this wave and does a solo session, with wave after wave pouring through (#4).  There we are caught in one of the great rookie mistakes of surf travel, being at a spot with no surfboard, no place to rent one and out of time...  Yeah, it pisses you off...
