Free-Floating Anxiety Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Today marks 15 weeks since we've started our response to the Corona Virus pandemic!  When's the last time you did something this religiously for 15 weeks?  And of course with the help of the fine burghers in Orange county and other spots that decided they'd had enough of the decidedly minimal personal restrictions, like wear a mask and keep an unsocial distance between themselves and their infected brethren, we've (California) had a pretty steady uptick.  Honestly, we understand the difficulty shutting things down causes businesses, schools and houses of worship.  But you know, as a human race we've been dealing with these pandemics for several millennia.  In the past they've wiped out millions of our ancestors and we can only imagine they'd cringe at the way we're finding this such an inconvenience.  It's like the inconvenience of "grazing" an iceberg to the passengers of the Titanic...  "The lifeboats?  They're fine...  there's a card game in the salon..."

Another gray morning in keeping with our June tradition and 7 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the west by 1kt and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was 63 and the water is 63.9.  Low tide was at 8:11am -0.2' and high tide follows at 3:16pm +4.2'.  There's a weak SSW swell out of 205º at 2.0' and that's just about what it was as we splashed our way to the out side and joined this raucous crowd (#1) celebrating the release of heirloom guilt into the universe...

Afterwards, cleansed of our sins, we joined Ryan Hall (#2) to catch up on some Hall family news.  Ryan is going to be a senior at Bishop Montgomery this year and has been in the water almost every day since the beaches opened up.  His father, Pat Hall, surfed with the Lost Boys and gave "Anaconda" Burke his nickname...  Last time we had seen him he was around 3'6", so the fact that we didn't immediately recognize him is understandable...

This (#3) is from the last magic carpet ride that we took...  Too spellbound to look down, we managed to get a photo of the ride...  There's really nothing to hold on to...
