What's In Store Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Some crazy weather over the last couple of days, including wind, smacking waves, rain, fog and sun.  A combination of fog, wind and surf caused this (#1) eerie haze to creep up the hillside at Torrance Beach.  This morning it was clear with 15+ miles visibility.  Winds were light offshore and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 54.3ºand the water is still 59º.  Low tide was at 9:49am +2.0' and high tide will be at 2:58pm +2.8'.  We currently have a west swell out of 260º at 3.3' and it was 3' to 4' and still walled up, like it has been all week.  Our StormSurf® App (#2) tells us that it should be 1' to 2' over the next few days, but we're also seeing hints of rain in the forecast and more wind events.  Reinforces the notion of checking it every morning.  On a bike ride this afternoon we saw some better peaks with the changing tide, so depending on the wind, the p.m. might be the answer...

Thank goodness there's no bridge at this spot (#3) or they might have tried to call it Trestles, which of course is taken.  They settled on Tracks and that seems pretty obvious.  What isn't so obvious is that a couple of times a day the train comes rolling through and if you're not paying attention and standing near or on the tracks it can scare the shit out of you...  It's one of those places on Oahu that doesn't break out very far (#4) maybe like Topaz or Hermosa.  This afternoon the Trade Winds were kicking up and there were some spectacular manes on the waves...

Congratulations to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on their inaugurations.  A couple of highlights from the proceedings were Lady Gaga and her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner and Amanda Gorman, the National Youth Poet Laureate.  Next to Suzi's rendition of the National Anthem at Dodger Stadium (and yes we are prejudiced) LG's was one of the most stirring we've ever heard.  None of the usual vocal gymnastics, but perfect emphasis and great delivery.  Amanda Gorman is from Los Angeles (a fact in which we should take great pride) and her poem "The Hill We Climb" was a stunning example of the power of poetry.  Instead of being the National Youth Poet Laureate (she's 21), they should just make her National Poet Laureate and be done with it...  You can check out both performances on YouTube...
