Sometimes On Saturday Film Review Surf & Culture Report
Lost Boys & Co...
Surf was 2' to 3' under overcast skies yesterday and if you were patient there were a few good ones coming through. In the afternoon we headed down to Dana Point / Doheny for the Dana Point Film Festival. It runs May 2-5 and you can look them up at danapointfilm.com.
We got a chance to see Anna Wilder Burns and Jordyn Romero's new film "Beyond Normal" at it's California debut. It's the story of Becca Speak, pro-surfer who thrice suffered traumatic brain injuries. She had a couple of serious concussions culminating with hitting the bottom of the wave pool at Waco, Texas. She lost the ability to speak and absolutely couldn't surf. The film chronicles her road to recovery and in essence what it means to be "normal."
A great short film, it's masterfully shot and edited and reveals to the viewer just how fragile our lives and surfing careers can be. It's got one more showing at Dana Point and we'll let you know when you can catch it locally. Don't miss it...
