First To The Top Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Getting closer to the top, it was getting cooler and damper with the clouds scudding around the peaks.  Some rather impressive peaks kept looming out of the mist, like this one in photo #1.

Visibility is a quarter of a mile and cloudy rainy skies.  Winds were predominantly out of the west but might blow up your skirt from any direction from 20 to 25kts.  The air temp was 59.9 and the water is still 60.6.  High tide was at 10:08am +6.4' and low tide will follow at 5:19pm -1.0'.  We have an increasing swell out of the west 268º at 5.2', but that's increasing hourly and by this evening it should be around 10'.  It was 5' to 8' at checkout this morning...  #4 gives you an idea.  Not looking like your perfect day at the beach, but it has a lot of character...

In #2 Buck is sensing that we're getting closer to the summit.  The last quarter of a mile is pretty much up the side of the mountain, to the notch between the peaks and down the other side to Camp #2.  Oddly, as you get closer to the summit you feel a little more energetic (According to LoLa and Buck.)

By the time we got to the top (photo #3) the sun had broken out a bit and shed some light on the festivities.  The native name means "Dead Woman's Pass" and it's 4215 meters or 13,820' and LoLa and Buck were feeling the thrill of victory, while the Professor appears to have knocked the marker out of alignment to steady himself.  We took a break here and then hiked down to Pacaymayu at 11,700' where we camped for the night.

Note:  For the last few years it has been getting increasingly difficult to find adequate space in the bar at Kincaid's.  After all this time we've decided that we might be better served by a different spot.  There's a new place in Hermosa called the "Laurel Tavern."  It's big, has a great bar, lots (lots) of parking across the street and nearby and their food is great.  They just opened, so no one knows about them yet and it would be perfect for our group.  Tell all the regulars about the change!  Now if you're still revved up to go to Kincaid's, Happy New Year!  We're going to try Laurel Tavern!
