Lost Boys & Co...

Here is our intrepid trio getting ready to begin the hike up, over, across, sideways and down on the Inka Trail.   Five days and 26 miles later we'd reach Machu Picchu the first "Lost City" of the Incas.  We say "first" lost city, because once Hiram Bingham discovered Machu Picchu, he became obsessed with the idea that there was another city even more lost...  We were actually in pretty good spirits despite the news that the first pass we'd summit on day two at 13,779' is called "Dead Woman's Pass."  The Professor suggested it might play better if it were called "El Condor Passa."  No one laughed and the name remains...

Redondo had a surf contest against South High this morning and took the Spartans down 103 to 65.  This felt especially good since South beat Redondo last year.  There was 5 miles visibility under hazy sun and winds were offshore by 3.0kts.  The sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 47.7 and seemed to get chillier after the sun came up.  The water was 60.6.  Low tide was at 9:45am +2.5' and high tide was at 2:59pm +3.8'.  We have a WSW swell out of 250º at 2.6'.  It was 3' with some good waves off some of the recently reconfigured sand bars.  Hermosa even seems to be working at low tides!

Lest you imagined we carried all of our stuff up ourselves, we had a raft of porters, a chef and a guide to assist us on our assault.  Up until a few years ago the porters could carry any bags regardless of weight.  Now they are limited to approximately 50lbs each, which still seems a bit onerous.  Here are a couple of porters weighing their backpacks, to make sure they don't exceed the weight requirements.  Many of these guys are farmers and only porter part-time.  One guy we talked to said that being a porter was easier than being a farmer.  Hard to figure out what he might grow on his farm?  Rocks?

In case you weren't resonating with the holidays just yet, the city of Hermosa had a tree lighting ceremony to get into the spirit.  Lots of great talent lead by Kevin Sousa.  The tree in Hermosa with surfers and volleyball players in the background is a favorite spot for those in the South Bay to take photos and send them to their snowbound relatives in the north and east...  We sent one to Boomfwappa and he reminded us that he lives in Torrance...
