So (#1 top) was one of our faves.  It featured a steam-bent oak frame and traditional metal hardware.  We immediately imagined, "Could you do that with bamboo?"  There's only one way to find out!

Overcast this morning with 13 miles visibility.  Sun was trying to break through.  Winds were variable and actually stopped for about 20 minutes from the nominal 1 to 3kts.  A bit of surface texture.  The air was 63.5º and the water is 66.9º.  High tide was at 11:00am +3.9' and low tide will be at 3:21pm +2.3'.  The really high tide today is this evening at 9:41pm a +6.9' floater.  Last night we actually thought you could paddle from Sapphire to Topaz OVER the rocks.  Haven't done that in a while!  It's a west swell out of 263º at 3.0' and it was 3' with some nice soft balls coming through.  It was Jah, Ronnie, Doc and the Professor doing the dance...

This (#1 bottom) bike was a an adventure in bent steel tubing.  The big swoop in the back was to absorb any bumps, so it was passingly flexible.  It featured a woven skirt guard so your dress (or kilt) wouldn't get caught.  Real gum rubber tires!

Lost Boys & Co... W e talked about how much building is going on in China.  There are so many new bridges across the Yangtze that they haven't named them all yet!  There are between 50 and a hundred going up between Yichang and Chongqing alone.  In our first photo, the bridge and road are so new that the road crosses the bridge and then doesn't go anywhere!  We watched them welding the superstructure in #2 and to our amazement we watched a guy put on a belt with eyes on the hips and get hoisted up a couple of hundred feet to near the top of this tower.  No nets, no additional straps, no hat - just flying there with a portable welding rig, sparks flying.  We actually saw guys spot welding stuff without dark glasses!  There are some tough guys up there!  Dude, you like gotta have a hat... A beautiful morning, with a few big clouds bumping along and 20 miles visibility.  Winds started onshore from the crack and they were light at checkout...

Sometimes On Friday/Saturday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... G reat group at Siblings Burrito Palace this morning! (#1)  Caroline joined us all the way from Atwater to catch a few gray ones. C loudy and 12 miles visibility.  Winds were light out of the south by 2 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 58.0 º and the water was 61.5 º .  Low tide was at 8:26am -0.6' and high tide follows at 4:00pm +3.4'.  SSW swell out of 202 º at 2.6' and it was 3' and some sharp little gray grinders... S mall surf doesn't have to mean lousy surf.  Here (#2) we have Sheamus Swift showing what you can do when you put your mind to it.  Sheamus got first place in the longboard division against Mira Costa on Thursday! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Cavalcade Of Champions Monday Surf & Culture Report

L et's start out with our own Tom Welch (#1) who got 4th Place in the Hermosa Triathlon this last Sunday at the Hermosa Pier.  While the rest of us were trying to find parking, Tom was biking, swimming and running and doing it better than all but three of his fellow competitors.  Congrats to Tom and we imagine next year will find him on top of the podium... H azy sun and barely 6 miles visibility this morning.  Winds wee light onshore, 1 to 2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 65.7º and the water has jumped to a fine 70.2º.  Low tide was at 7:11am +2.5' and high tide will be at 3:11pm +4.7'.  It's a SSW swell out of 207º at 2.3' and it was 1' to 2' and perfect for today's start of the Galactic Small Wave Championships.
