Lost Boys & Co...

We were cruising the other day and stopped at the bust of George Freeth near the entrance to the Redondo Pier.  Not too long ago George was returned to the pier after almost being melted into scrap by some metal munching bandits.  We re-read his accomplishments and considered how fortunate Redondo was to have a real hero who we could call our own.  People will argue about who was the "first" surfer on the mainland, but in his time he was definitely the best.  Good on ya' George!

A pretty much perfect winter's morning, even though we've got a couple of days to go (the 22nd is the solstice.)  Clear and cloudless skies with 25 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 5.7kts and the sea surface was smooth to almost glassy.  The air temperature was 50.6° and the water was 58.6° head-chilling degrees.  High tide is at 5:00am +6.0' and low tide clips the minuses at 12:16pm  -0.1'.  We have a west swell out of 271° at 3.0' and we're calling it a rising 3' to 4'.  Hermosa had some outsides almost head high, but they were breaking in block long sections.  Donnie Souther managed to talk us into going out.  How come whenever we go out with him it looks like Puerto Escondido?  Okay, to be fair, at least we made some in Hermosa...  

It was with some surprise that we heard that Kim Jong Il had passed away.  We didn't even know that he was "illin'."  Then much to our amazement we find that he had left the reins of government in the hands of Kim Jong Un!  Now, until we saw the photo, we didn't realize who he was!  But now we realize that it's really the kid we knew as "Johnny Un" or "Pak One" who bodyboarded 19th St.  Dude, he has asked about a dozen times for a Lost Boys App!  He gets one NOW!  Here's some things you might not know:
1.  He loves basketball and had his pic taken with Kobe!
2.  Went to school in Switzerland.  Kinda shy with chicks.
3.  Called himself "Pak Un" at school. 
4.  Loves Nike sneaks.  Has almost as many pairs as Emelda Marcos.
5.  Likes to go "military" on occasion.  No problem with nukes.  Gonna make the hats even BIGGER!
6.  Calls his haircut "the ambition cut."  The rage with all the NK kids.
7.  Had plastic surgery to look more like gran-pops, Kim Il Sung.
8.  No matter when his birthday really is, it's January 1st and it's a national holiday.
9.  He's in a new documentary being shown the Korean troops and he's characterized as having "keen insight and a deadly 3-pointer."
10.  Like his father, NK media said that he has shot the world's lowest round of golf (with 11 holes in one) and does not defecate. 
(Okay, so now you know what we know...  And oh yeah, you can delete that line item for toilet paper at the palace...   Ed.)

Lost Boys & Co... P rofessor, This is a shot taken last week at a secret spot that is less than 30 miles away from you guys. Any guesses?  My buddy Dave sent it from Salta Verde Point on the backside of Catalina. Only accessible by boat or if you know someone with the key. Tip: The guy in the pic is the guy with the key! Sea Wolf... S o, apparently if you decide to leave Avalon and head to the backside you might score on a south swell.  For some reason this place looks like there might be some rocks on the inside.  No indications of that other than the boils following the guy with the key... C loudless skies this morning with 20+miles visibility.  Winds were off to 2.2kts and the sea surface had a residual bump that held all day.  The air temperature was 79.3˚ and the water was 66.4˚, apparently affected by the wind and upwelling.  High tide was at 6:55am +3.9' and low tide will be at 11:46am +2.8' for a little less than a foot differential.  There's a SW swell out of

S ancho, on this morning's Sruf Familia thread said it best, "Somber rainy day for Jimmy."  J immy Buffett died Friday, September 1.  He was 76 years old and had recently been struggling with health issues.  A Lost Boy of the first order his music was the sound-track for our lives. B ut he might have said it best: "But there's one particular harbor/ So far yet so near/ Where I see the days as they fade away/ And finally disappear." Not Forest Hills Friday Surf & Culture Report

W ho's behind those Foster-Grants?  Well, we'll bet that he's NEVER worn a pair of F-G's.  Are those Oliver People's?  Cartier's, Garrett Leight's?  We'll say Tom Ford's and he should be their poster boy.  Yep, it's Jetski in the arena at the US Open.  Looking rather trim in his court-side togs, we're waiting for his description of the action... W e continue our assault on some of the smallest waves ever ridden!  We'll have to check the Guinness book, but we think we're on to something.  So it was ten miles visibility under partly cloudy skies and winds were offshore by 5 to 7kts.  The3 air temp was 63.9º and the water was 70.7º at the ever popular #46221 Santa Monica Buoy.  High tide was at 11:01am +5.5' and low tide follows at 4:52pm +0.7'.  It turns out we observed that low tide and even with the afternoon south wind howling around 10kts, Sapphire still looked fairly smooth.  We had a south swell out o
