Another Summer Solstice (9:24pm) Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Well, if a building (#1) can live in infamy this might be one of the best candidates we know.  The Texas Book Depository's sixth floor window was the perch from which Lee Harvey Oswald shot President Kennedy.  A rather stolid structure, in the Romanesque-Revival style, it is burned into the minds of most Baby-Boomers who remember exactly where they were when they heard the news that Kennedy had been shot...

Summer starts tonight at 9:24pm and we'll be at the party.  This morning skies were foggy and visibility was around one mile.  Winds were light onshore by 2.6kts and the sea surface had a light roll to it.  The air temperature was 61.5 and the water was 65.8.  High tide was at 7:16am +3.7' and low tide was at 12:34pm +1.3'.  We have a 3.3' SSW swell out of 193º and it was 3' to 4' in the water (unless you were one of the guys out there learning who estimated it was 7' to 9', the kids in class were kind to them...)

Likewise, for those who entertain several conspiracy theories #2 was taken from the "Grassy Knoll."  Daresay, grassy knoll would never have been in parenthesis before this event...

Outside the building (#3) there's a plaque describing the building's import.  In the last paragraph it reads in part "...Lee Harvey Oswald allegedly shot and killed President John F. Kennedy."  The word "allegedly" has been repeatedly circled by onlookers who don't buy the Warren Commissions Report...

Finally, we actually got to go to the window above that on the sixth floor and took a look at the motorcade route.  Near the middle of the road, above the trees, there's an X.  It marks the spot where the first bullet hit President Kennedy.  The Dark car is over the X where the second shot killed the president.  You have to decide whether or not Oswald was capable of making that shot.  The photo makes it look farther away, but you'd have to be a pretty steady aim and have perfect reflexes to get both shots on the mark...  We'll never know...
