Working With A Net Wednesday Surf &Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... H ere (#1) is part of the recon crew dangling over the rushing, snow fed Lütshine River about 100' below. Under where the Unterer Grindelwaldgletscher (Lower Grindelwald Glacier) cut a narrow canyon as it's been retreating for the last 100 years.  When they first cut this trail and built it out of the gorge part of it was through ice tunnels.  Well that's history and maybe there are some folks who don't believe in climate change, but they do.  Now in the place of the ice tunnels are dozens of waterfalls bursting into the gorge making it rather like walking behind Niagara Falls.  If that wasn't enough, they spread this spider web for those who wanted to climb out over the river.  Well, our lead, Nanny the Scout, took off across the span and Lilly Panda Cheeseburger followed her without reserve.  You can see that Rebecca, Nathan and Scarlett had some reservations.  Fun and a little terrifying, it was done with the promise of chocolate at the e

Lost Boys & Co... Y et another beautiful summer's day.  And if you were considering climbing the Eiger on the day that we shot this pic, you'd probably would've made the first two sections without any problem.  The record for the climb is an insane 2hrs and 22min by the Swiss Alpinist Ueli Steck.  But a long day or two days is more like it.  It's over 5,000' and the climb is like putting two El Capitans together.  The primo conditions are to get a high pressure dome over the area and climb as fast as you can... 20 miles visibility with light winds in the 1 to 3kt range and smooth sea surface.  Both the air and the water were checking in at 64º and warming up during the day quite nicely.  Low tide was at 6:53am -0.9' and high tide is at 1:42pm 3.9'.  It's a south swell out of 199º at 3.0' and it was 1' to 2' and we decided to take a plunge to avoid dragging our skags...  Maybe mañana... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it"

Dog Days Of Summer Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have three surf dogs (#1) celebrating the "Dog Days" of summer.  The Professor and Doc are looking cool enough, but Scout is still sporting her fur coat.  Maybe she'll get to take a swim before it gets too hot.  Nice smile though...   S ome good waves this weekend although it looked small and weak.  Those fun days when the waves are big enough to ride and small enough not to worry about getting blasted.  A little too small this morning although the skies were clear and the sun was blazing away.  Winds were light out of the SW at 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air at checkout was 64.9º and the water is a delightful 66.7º.  Low tide was at 6:08am -1.1' and high tide will be at 12:56pm +3.7'.  It's a SSW swell out of 215º at 2.6' and it was about half of that at 1' to 2' and breaking in ankle deep water.  Maybe mañana... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Comin' Into L.A. From Over The Pole Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W e're baaack!  Flying west from Europe you leave at 12:45pm and get into Los Angeles at 2:45pm.  Really did seem like a lot longer than a two hour flight... Did get a chance to see some bitchen' ice bergs off of some of the Greenland ice flows though. 7 miles visibility this morning under partly to mostly cloudy skies.  Winds were out of the south at 3 to 4kts and the sea was lightly textured.  The air temperature was 63.0º and although they have the water temperature at the pier at 68º we demurred and suggested it should be 65.5º.  We were somewhat encouraged to see the buoy had the temperature at 65.1º, in some agreement with our empirical findings.  High tide was at 9:22am +3.3' and low tide will be at 1:26pm +2.4'.  Swell is out of the SSW 202º at 3.0' and that was about it in the lineup.  Some fun ones... G etting ready for the Olympics in Paris and we got to see the rings hauled up on the tower (#1) in case someone hadn't got the me

Amazing Alpine Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Took the train out of Montreux straight up into the alps.  Some amazing vistas on the way.  Plenty of water, but we saw tons of hang gliders who floated around for hours on end.  Got to take some huevos to jump off of a perfectly good alp.  We also noted some rafters on a couple of the more navigable rivers, but there were also some class 4+ rapids along the road. Low tide is at 9:33am +0.7' and high tide follows at 4:59pm (not 5) +4.1'.  Swell is out of the SSW at 2.6' and the water is 62.1.  Does that sound right?  It's all snow melt up here and in the high 30's, low 40's.  Brrr!  But it's beautiful… So, after hours of waiting for the clouds to part, we finally got a good shot of the Jungfrau (#1) and the surrounding peaks.  It's the Jungfrau, Eiger and Schwartzmonk.  Ski lifts all over town, but only the highest peaks are covered.  Actually there are a couple of glaciers up there and we'll ID them for the Eiger and the curiou

Smoke on The Water Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Damn the guy with the flare gun at the Mothers of Invention concert!  Burned the Casino to the ground or we should say to the water.  Got to tour the Mountain Studio where Queen cut some of their best work. But we soon headed down to the local Sapphire Rocks (#1) with predictable results.  It keeps telling us there's a 3.0' SSW swell, but it's not looking quite so robust.  Here or there.  On to Interlaken mañana and some high altitude recon!  Good news the water is 61.3 and some sun keeps poking through! We All Came Out To Montreux Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... So here we are on the shores of Lake Geneva in Montreux where they will be hosting the 58th annual jazz festival.  Going on from July 5th through the 20th with some of the biggest names in the current jazz scene. Back in Hermosa there's light winds and a SSW swell out of 200 true.  It's 2.6' at the buoy and looking a tad ragged on the cams.  What do Doc and Donnie have to say? Freddie Mercury built a studio here in town and they were so impressed they had this bronze cast in his honor (#1.).  Tons of art and music along the shoreline!   "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Early Morning Down By The Seine Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Not to bore you, but we found no bore.  The mouth of the Seine does in fact empty into the Atlantic at Le Havre, but it does so after being mitigated in such a manner that a bore typically doesn't happen.  Of course during heavy storms things can get pretty hectic, but no one seems to think you can do anything remotely like surfing at that point. Meanwhile at 2am in Hermosa Beach, the wind is out of the SSW at 3.3kts and the sea surface is lightly textured.  The air is 58.8 and the water is 61.2 at the buoy.  It's a SW swell it of 216 at 3.0' and by daybreak there should be a little something to make things interesting! Meanwhile, it appears they couldn't spell SRUF right in Versailles either.  This lad was off to play rugby and couldn't imagine why we thought his shirt was interesting… "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Thierry Gateau Bateau Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Still looking for the tidal bore on the Seine.  On the river all afternoon, beautiful, but no bore.  Not boring at all! Meanwhile, waiting for the tide to come up in Hermosa.  Looks like the wind is onshore and just a bit of the south swell is sneaking through to Hermosa. Staying in radio contact! Oui Oui Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co… Well, here we are in Paris waiting for our Seine photos to download… Apparently our weak wi-if isn't kicking things down from the cloud fast enough. So the tide is low at 2:33pm +1.9', and it's sunny enough with 10 miles visibility.  Hermosa is 2' to 3' and it looks as good as it has in the last 2 weeks.  It's a SSW swell at 3.3' and the buoy tells us the water is 61.3. We'll see if we can't get some in-time photos tomorrow.  Meanwhile we'll share this photo of Jetski and the Professor at Le Restaurant Chart House on Sunday evening… When The Surf Breaks, We'll Fix It…" The Professor Sent from Yahoo Mail for iPad

Tous les Matins du Monde Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... C loudy this morning with 7 miles visibility.  Winds were mercifully offshore by 3 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 61.3º and by some marvelous coincidence the water was also 61.3º.  High tide is at 9:02am +3.8' and low tide will be at 1:50pm +1.7' setting up for a really high tide at 7:35pm a +6.4'.  We have a predominantly west swell out of 267º at 3.5' and it was a high tide floated 2' to 3' and getting pretty close to shore. O kay!  For the next couple of weeks we'll be off trying to find the tidal bore of the Seine river, rumored to be close to Le Havre.  Who knows what mischief awaits, but we'll try to post updates when the schedule allows!  Let's hope the summer arrives soon and banishes the June gloom! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

So June Gloom Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T oday would be the poster child for June Gloom (#1) (suitable for framing!) at the beach in Southern California.  Saying it's about 7 miles visibility and currently no wind.  The sea surface is smooth with the air at 58.0º and the water claiming to be 60.6º, although it doesn't quite feel like it.  High tide at 8:03am +3.8' and low tide follows at 1:08pm +1.3'.  It's a SSW swell out of 199º at 3.3' and we're calling it 3.5' and getting better as the tide recedes. W e'll be heading over the pond tomorrow so the report might be sketchy for the next few days, but our plan is to send some communications while on the road!  Pay attention! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!
