These Are The Days Of Miracle & Wonder Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of surfer, photographer, Lost Boy and bon vivant, Randy Ruby.  We met Randy around 1974 when he was working at Howard's Market, where Trader Joe's is today.  He ended up dating Cathy Carlisle for a while and was a regular at our parties and the local scene.  He was severely injured when he was unloading a box of Martinelli's Apple Juice and unbeknownst to anyone the batch had fermented.  When he grabbed the first bottle it exploded and set off a chain reaction that left his right arm shredded and embedded glass over his entire body.  Sometime after that he had a few folks over to his apartment and a burning cigarette fell into a couch and several hours later the whole apartment was engulfed in flames.  Randy got out with a herculean effort that left him badly burned.  His roommate Steve Hazelton perished in the blaze and Randy endured years of skin grafts and operations.  Despite all of his bad luck, he never complained.  He kept surfing and through his thirties he was one of the best in the South Bay.  Later in life he took up photography and with his waterman's eye and reflexes he caught some fabulous images of the surf, local color and sea life.  He was enthusiastic, courageous, unfailingly buoyant and a friend to everyone.  Fortunately, for all of us, his images remain and we can still view the world through his lens...  No word yet on a paddle-out...  Ride on Randy...

Start of a warm few days here in the So. Bay.  Probably some fog in store if it gets as hot as they say it might.  15 miles visibility this morning under clear skies.  Winds were offshore by 5.2kts and the sea surface was smooth to the touch...  The air temperature was 64.9 and the water is 64.6 at the buoy.  Low tide was at 5:01am +2.4' and high tide will be at 11:15am +5.4'.  We have a south swell out of 184º at 3.6' and enough of it is getting through to make it 3'+ and passably fun.  Coach Duncan Avery told us it was pretty wally-crashy, but we got just enough tide to get a couple of pier nuggets!  BINGO!

Okay, when you think California has it all, here's something it doesn't have, a "Brew Thru."  Yes, it's exactly what you think it is, a drive-through beer store and gas station.  When we showed this concept to Jetski he said, "I'll have a six-pack of gas and a gallon of beer!"

Speaking of Jetski, here is a shot of Natasha just after her spa date at the Professor's.  She got waxed and polished and looked like a million bucks!  She surfed like a million bucks as well...

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it"
The Professor!!
