Take It Easy Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

The island of Roatan floats in the western Caribbean, below Belize, east of Honduras.  It includes part of the great coral reef system that starts near Belize and ends up with the islands south of Roatan proper.  You can pretty quickly ascertain that there isn't much wave action in this part of the world.  All of the fetches are relatively small, hundreds not thousands of miles, or blocked by not inconsequential barriers like Cuba or the Antilles.  But on the other hand it includes some of the best diving/snorkeling in the world.  Honestly, that was enough to pique our interest, but we also thought, "Well there might be something rideable out there!"  (#1) So here's our accommodations at Infinity Bay.  The reef is close enough to swim to and on the outside the wall drops down to about 170' and then like 700' beyond that.  When you get to that edge, it's like you've jumped off into the Grand Canyon and are flying over...

COLD this morning.  Under hazy, smoke tinged skies we had 10 miles visibility.  Although it was windy in the foothills it was calm at the beach and we had a rolling swell on the surface.  The air was 42.9 and the water was 62.4.  High tide was at 9:34am +6.9' and low tide is a super moon driven -1.3' at 4:47pm.  We have a SSW swell out of 205º at 4.3', but it's been fluctuating wildly, like at 8:30am when it was out of 1º North!  That's a pretty good trick for the South Bay.  It was 3' to 4' with some fatter outsides, but warbling and not easy to catch...

The roads are shitty, but they have a great water taxi system.  (#2) Is the water taxi dock and shows a bit of the beach.  Light coral based sand with lots of shells.

The pool water (#3) was cooler than the ocean.  Which meant it was 75º, while the ocean was closer to 80º.  If you got down to eye-level in the pool, it looked like you could swim all the way to the water.  Actually we never swam farther than the bar...

Famous for their sunsets (#4) this is a good example of the genre...

Laurel Tavern this Friday to ease the Christmas shopping burden and share a bit of cheer.  5:30 at the big center table...
