Up On A Tightwire Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

The local "PetroSol" gasoline station had this great mural (#1) on one side of the parking lot. The PetroSol is a great player in the community.  Besides gasoline and automotive fluids and service, they have a restaurant and a large screen TV that shows major sporting events for the community!  There can be two or three hundred people tail-gating there for a big futbol game...

Sunny this morning, but the fires have created a low lying haze that's over the water so visibility was 10 miles at best.  Winds were out ofthe south by 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 45.5 and the water is 62.6.  High tide was at 10:23am +6.5' and low tide was at 5:41pm -1.0'.  We have a SSW swell out of 200º at 3.0', but it was a bit smaller than that.  We'll call it 2' and smoky...

For the most part the roads are just okay.  The worst roads are on the west part of the island and they are full of potholes, landslides and upended pavement.  Of course we stayed on the west end.  Much easier and a lot more fun are the water-taxis.  (#2) Features Michael and Sarah cuddling up for a ride to the West Bay which took about 15 minutes and gets you as cold as you'll be in your stay on the island.

The sun was getting low on the horizon and LoLa (#3) thought we should head down the beach and scope out the dinner possibilities.  We found everything from fine dining to shacks that featured conch and lobster and local delicacies.  One afternoon on the other side of the island we were walking from Flowers Bay and we ran into a woman selling rice pudding cakes.  For one dollar U.S. (23 Lempiras) you got a piece of pudding cake that was more than one person could eat.  While we were tasting the cake, Tarzan asked what was in the pot?  Turned out it was stewed iguana!  How do you say "no" to stewed iguana.  The iguana was served with beans and rice and plantains that tasted like potatoes.  Pretty damned delicious...

Here (#4) we have a close-up of Tarzan's back.  You might recognize the pattern as that of Diplora Strigosa, more commonly known as Brain Coral.  Now remember Brain Coral is an animal (or animals) and in this case it can have nematosists which will sting you much like a jellyfish.  Apparently Tarzan bumped up against this thing and it left it's unmistakable mark...

Reminding you it's Laurel Tavern on Friday for happy hour...  Michael's in town so come say hi...
