Windrow Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Thought we'd look back at a year ago this week and see what was happening.  Of course there's always a checkout going on.  In this case (#1) it was Kawika, Doc ?, Jah and Bacalläo.  (Photo courtesy EuroTrash, Barry Santos (originally published as "I'm checking YOU out!"))

Cloudy this morning with less than 10 miles visibility.  Winds out of the SE by 2 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 54.5º and the water is 58.8º.  High tide peaks at 9:19am +5.9' and low tide is at 4:35pm -0.7'.  It's a west swell out of 261º at 3.9' and it was 3' to 4'...

So #2 doesn't look particularly interesting until you realize it's blowing like crazy from the east!  Early in the morning it started out on-shore and then it switched and blew a gale.  It blew all of the loose palm fronds from the west side of Catalina on to the street, then it blew all of the fronds from the east side to the middle of the road.  By the tide it stopped blowing there were windrows of palm fronds up and down Catalina Ave...

The ocean went crazy with the shifts in the wind (#3).  There had been white caps with the westerly wind and when it switched the white caps turned to aerosol and the blow-back looked like Nicaragua during a "lake effect" episode.  You could paddle out but it was an adventure getting in against the wind.  There still might be people out there...
