What Did Columbus Know And When Did He Know It Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

YES, it was raining this morning and we took advantage of a break in the weather to snap this rainbow (#1) above the Rainbow Tower.  Coming down heavy at times it started about 4 in the morning and went until almost mid-day.  Winds were coming in from all over the compass at 2 to 4kts and the sea surface could be smooth to bumped up.  The air was warmish at 62.5º and the water is 68.7º.  High tide was at 10:50am +5.9' and low tide was at 5:48pm +0.2'.  Swell is out of the SSW 198º at 3.0' and it was smaller at 1' to 2' and short period...

"First one to the top gets to take a break."  Clarke and the Professor watched these guys (#2) for about 2 minutes and finally had to turn away.  They were leaning off the ladders trying to scrape as far away as possible, twisting on the corners and behaving like it was no big deal.  The guy near the top was on a triple extension and it didn't look particularly stable...  Nor did he...

(#3) Where do we think Quicksilver got the idea for their logo?

In 1958 we were headed for our annual pilgrimage to Pismo Beach (#4).  We asked our dad if we could get surfboards.  He said he could make us a couple!  Cool.  So unbeknownst to him, he ended up inventing the elia.  It was a piece of 14" wide pine that he rounded off and varnished and painted a diamond on one and a star on the other, so we could tell them apart.  No fins, but their length kept them pointed in the right direction.  He said that they used boards like these when they went to Seal Beach in the 30's.  That's Pop sitting on the front bumper of his '56 Chevy holding a fishing pole like Elvis and that's the Professor pointing to his blade.  All that we can remember is the rush of riding the white water and turning a brilliant shade of bluish-purple from the cold water...

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it"
