10,000 & Counting Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S o we started calculating the number of wave drawings the Professor has done over the years and we figured it was right around 9,999.  We called him and asked if he could do another one and make it an even 10,000.  This was his latest doodle done with one of those cheapo 4-color pens that you get at the dime store.  He said, "It makes you do the most with a limited palette!"  ( Guest Editor: Barry Santos ) C loudy this morning with 5 miles visibility .  Winds were light offshore and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a chilly 59.9º and the water has dropped at the buoy to 62.6º although they posted a 68 on the Hermosa tower.  High tide was at 8:01am +4.5' and low tide will follow at 1:00pm +2.6'.  It's a SW swell out of 220º at 2.3' and it was 1' to 2' on the sand. ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... T he surf was sooo small that we fished again today.  This photo was from Tuesdays session, with Jah, Anupa, the Professor and Laurie (who took a dip to get in some water time!) P artly cloudy and almost 10 miles visibility.  No wind to speak of and smooth sea surface.  The air was 54.9º and the water is 64.4º.  High tide was at 7:33am +4.2' and low tide follows at 12:11pm +3.0'.  We have a weak WSW swell out of 255º at 2.3' and it's 1' and poor in the surf line.  J ah and Christian actually got a few waves this morning so there is some loose talk about at least paddling!  Very loose... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... M ost of the Redondo Girls Surf Squad (#1) getting some after paddle choco-infusion.  Could be the best girl's team Redondo has ever fielded! C loudy this morning with 5 miles visibility.  Winds wee light onshore and the sea surface was lightly textured.  The air was 61.9º and the water has finally dipped below 65 to a close, but no cigar, 64.9º.  High tide is at 6:58am +3.9' and low tide will be at 10:38am +3.4'.  It's a SSW swell out of 210º at 2.0' and it's 1' to 2' on the sand... W aterproof, weatherproof and a stylish gray, these hats are from our own lifeguard buddy, Onto.  He's put together a business that creates beach packs that include first aid stuff and all manner of things that you need to keep safe at the beach.  It's called "Playa Mate" and we'll get more info on the particulars.  For now though we got this bitchen cap! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Mola Mola Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... H ere (#1) we have our two fishing derby contestants (Why is everything a contest?)  Actually, here we have our sensei, Anupa Asokan and her acolyte the Professor, self proclaimed "Worst Fisherman Ever."  Anupa has been holding fishing lessons lately and the Professor decided that if the surf is broken you might as well try to pull fish out of it before they bump their noses on the sand.  Anupa has started a not-for-profit group for the conservation of fish and fishing awareness.  In this case the Professor is perfect since no fish will be harmed if he casts his line into the water. S o why the hell weren't we surfing?  Well, it was gray and a chilly 63.5º, although the water is still 65.7º.  Calm winds and in all the years we've been doing this report, we've never seen the high tide AND low tide listed as the same.  +3.4' at 5:40am and 7:58am!  Well it is near the equinox.  Maybe it's the tidal equinox?  There's a weak SSW out of

Lost Boys & Co... Not only is fall in the air, but it's on the calendar as well!  Yep, it's our first report of the season as we sprinkle ourselves with cinnamon and pumpkin spice... Gray skies and limited visibility with patches of random fog.  Winds are out of the south by 1 to 3kts and the sea surface is lightly textured.  The air was 62.2º at checkout and the water temperature is 65.7º.  Getting uncomfortably close to a season defining 65º.  Low tide was at 6:38am +2.8' and high tide will be at 1:27pm +5.6'.  It's a minuscule 1.6' SSW swell out of 193º and it's about half of that on the beach... In all fairness the sign (#1) says "No Parking or Stopping Anytime" and then goes on to say "No Motorized Vehicles... On STRAND."  So this fellow taking things on face value didn't stop on the Strand, but made it all the way to the sand.  When the local constabulary arrived they couldn't quite figure out what to do.   They posited

Lost Boys & Co... We're heading down to the beach at 6:15am and the temp is 61º (coffee) in the air and the water is a relatively toasty 66.2º.  Now it is cloudy and to top it off, it's drizzling (coffee.)  Boo.  Wind is also on shore at 7kts and the sea surface is generously textured (more coffee.)  High tide is at 11:08am +6.3' and low tide follows really low at 5:48pm -0.1'.  It's a SSW swell out of 198º at 2.6' and it's half that big... So, when the above conditions persist, the Familia is liable to do strange and fascinating things.  This morning there was a seminar on eyebrow length at Scotty's (#1).  Our speaker had such robust eyebrows that you could hear the wind whistle through them as he entered the room.  You could see them when he had his back to you.  Gentlemen, this could be your future.  Don't laugh...    "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

No Influencers Here Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Photo #1 about sums up the entire report this morning.  Gray cloudy skies with 7 miles visibility.  Forecaster hedge on the possibility of rain - but we're saying "No rain."  Winds were onshore from the NNW, 2 to 5kts and the sea surface was lightly textured.   The air was 62.1º and the water is 66.2º.  High tide was at 10:33am 6.2' and low tide will follow at 4:55pm -0.0'.  It's a SSW swell out of 200º at 2.3' and it was 1' to 2' and cute, but barely rideable.  No boogiers were observed... We are proud again this year, to have slipped below the criteria for "Influencers."  Apparently our political, social and artistic abilities have remained below the bar and our meager numbers have resulted in little or no affect on the population as a whole.  Thank you for your continued lack of support and indifference to our material!  Until the wheels fall off... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professo

Lost Boys & Co... P hoto the First, shows us the moon sending down some fabulous rays to light the playing field at Sapphire.  It was remarkable in it's luminosity and apparent size.  C lear skies and 15 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore at 2 to 45kts and the sea surface was smooth, but the wind kicked up early and added some texture.  The air was a chilly 59.0º and the water is 65.3º.  Supposed to be more warm weather in the forecast to stave off falling into Fall.  High tide is at 10:01am +5.9' and low tide is at 4:05pm +0.2'.  Heading for some minus afternoon tides this week.  A SSW swell out of 213º at 2.6' and it was 3' and fun enough for your average bear or Lego™ man... P hoto the second, shows the descending moon (which seems to be showing a smirky smile) getting ready to dive into the ocean just outside of the pier.  Numerous fisherpeople and the curious cheered the falling orb and leapt up and down at the sight.  At one point it appeared to be ris

Lost Boys & Co... T here we were on the bounding main trying not to throw up our cinnamon-apple donut.  So we didn't get a chance to write a report, but instead of surfing we snorked on Catalina.  Truth be told, many interesting things were discovered on this trip including a bitchen pair of RayBans ™ a screwdriver and an abalone shell perfect for display, all brought to the surface by Anupa.  We also discovered that Luau Larry's was out of hats, but NOT Wicky Wackers™.   Lina discovered she is NOT fond of sharks, Ed had a leak in his mustache and Burnsy forgot her wetsuit.  By acclimation, we have decided to spend the night on next year's trip.  A beautiful fall day, despite the calendar telling us it's still summer.  Visibility was 10 miles, with few clouds and winds were calm.  The sea surface was smooth.  The air at checkout was 59.9º and the water is 66.0º at the buoy.  Probably 69 in the surf.  High tide 9:32am +5.5' and low tide 3:17pm +0.7'.  It'

Lost Boys & Co... Here we have (#1) three fellows who have surfed a few hundred thousand waves between them.  On your left is Fred Tisue, the best surfing dentist ever.  Now you can argue that Doc Ball was the first, Barney Wilkes was an innovator in both dentistry and surfing and Don James got the most shots in the mags.  But none of them ever caught more waves, bigger waves (Mexico, Tavarua, Hawaii, etc.) or rode as long as Fred.  We still have his fillings in our heads after all these years.  Then there's Capt. Donaldo, who's record speaks for itself.  If you don 't know Donnie, you don't know surfing in the South Bay or Mexico or Hawaii.  There's only one question:  "Do you know Don Souther?"  The Professor has a tattoo...  (That's the best we could do...) Overcast with 6 miles visibility.  Noticeably cooler.  Air 66.1º and the water is down to 67.8º.  High tide at 8:08am a wonky +3.9' and low tide follows at 12:08pm +3.1'.  It's a

S ummer is running on empty as the heat wave is due to cool off this week.  10 miles visibility and hazy sunshine.  Winds were consistent out of the south at 3 to 5kts.  The sea surface was roughed up a bit and there were short wave intervals.  The air temperature was 66.1º and the water dropped a couple to 69.8º.  Low tide at 5:41am +2.5' and high tide fills in at 12:50pm +4.9'.  Setting up for some single tide days later in the week.  A mainly south swell out of 195º at 3.3'.  It was 3' with some bigger wal

Lost Boys & Co... O ne of the celestial gifts of getting up early to go surfing is that sometimes the sunrises are beyond spectacular.  This (#1) was looking east from our perch on the sand in Hermosa this morning.  As it turns out, we also got to watch the Space Station soar overhead as we were loading the bus... 10 miles visibility under partly cloudy skies (that really added to the sunrise light show.)  Winds were calm and the sea surface had some light texture.  The air temp was 71.0º and the water was actually cooler at 70.2º.  Low tide was early at 5:11am +1.2' and high tide will follow at 11:28am +5.1'.  We have a SSW swell out of 200º at 3'.  We'll call it 3' with some walled up faces that only the fleet could appreciate.  A couple of fleet afoot surf class chargers splitting the peak (#2). Lost Boys & Co... Yes!, Anupa had these great stickers (#1) made advertising her not-for-profit fish conservation group, "Fish On."  She's going to let us know when we can contribute to the cause.  She's already been in some high level meetings in Washington and locally cementing her place in the aquatic community.  If you like to fish and are concerned about the environment this just might be the group for you. One of those standout mornings in the South Bay.  It really looked like summer.  10 miles visibility and little or no wind.  The sea surface was glassy.  The air was a warm 68.0º and the water was an even warmer 69.8º.  High tide was late at 11:08am +5.0' and low tide follows at 5:14pm +1.3'.  It's a SSW swell out of 205º at 3.0' and it was 1' to 3' and some little shorebound zippers.  We're going to call it a tie with Larry Dairy winning the surfing category and José Bacallao taking the SUP honors.  Capt. Lost Boys & Co... S o, there were finally some waves this morning (#1) and the crew made the 7:30 hard call.  Champs, all of them champs.  That being said the hard call is for 7:00am mañana.  Apparently there are people who have to go to work, whatever that is... H azy sun burning off quickly to a steamy morning.  7 miles visibility, no wind and glassy seas.  The air temperature was 64.0º and the water is 70.2º.  High tide was late at 10:49am +4.9' and low tide was at 4:39pm +1.3'.  Tides are due to flip on Friday.  Swell out of the SSW 211º at 2.3' and it was 2' to 3' making for some late summer fun ones.  To top it off LoLa and Sancho swam out and body surfed and joined the crew. B urnsy brought out her new whip and got some good ones right out of the gate.  Wait 'til she gets it wired.  There won't be a good left without her on it...  We'll get a photo! #2.   Art shot!  We noticed this reflection in #1 and thought  it was interesting in and of its

Lost Boys & Co... T here are numerous ways to get across the water.  If it's on the Big Island we'd recommend paddling.  Laurie Armour and her crew did just that and managed to beat all of the other women in the race from Kailua-Kona to Honaunau.  Here (#1) are the jubilant paddlers!  Looks like they covered the distance in 32min 18sec.  Last time we were on the Big Island it took us longer to drive... O vercast this morning and visibility was 3 miles through the heavy haze.  Winds wee light offshore and the sea surface was glassy.  The air temperature was 67.3º and the water is 70.0º.  High tide was at 10:28am +4.8' and low tide will be at 4:06pm +1.4'.  It was a changing SW swell out of 210º at 1.6' and it was 1' to 2'.  The amazing part of this is that Jetski, Larry Dairy, Ronnie, Anton and the Professor surfed it with some success.  Supposed to be bigger tomorrow and we'll be checking it out early! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it&q

Lost Boys & Co... T he action in the water this morning was absolutely astonishing!  Nary a wave went unridden as the Familia caught everything in sight.  A few standouts were LoLa, who had the highest wave count by almost two to one!  José Bacallao, who took advantage of the glassy conditions and glided to victory on the Rocket™.  Tom, Anupa and Kaitlyn tied for the largest wave all catching a macking third reef outside.  To add to the excitement we had Logan, Anton, José Barahona and Ronnie all on boards grabbing the outsides on the rising tide. T he water was a warm 73.4º and the air warmed as the morning slid by.  Winds were light offshore and it was glassy.  High tide was at 10:09am +4.7' and low tide will be at 3:33pm +1.6'.  It was a west swell out of 269º true and it was 2' to 3' in the surfline. Lost Boys & Co... O f course the big news on the Boogie™ scene is that Doc Scale was in the line-up this morning.  He sat outside waiting for the set waves and didn't disappoint as he and A-Aron vied for position.  It wasn't carnage but it was something close as Doc pulled ahead and then what appeared to be through A-Aron.  Everyone in and out of the water waited to see who would surface and to their great delight and relief both washed up on the beach simultaneously. K athy Welch debuted in her matching boogie and outfit.  She too waited on the outside and Tom gave her pointers as she stretched to the inside.  Speaking of Tom, we guessed his foot was a size 12.  Nay nay, it's a 14 and once again he shunned fins for obvious reasons.   " B ig Drop" Burnsy was rockin' the leap as she took off late on both the Rocket™ and her boogie.  Two great rights that demonstrated her aquatic skills.  Rocket Miller rode the "Tuna" today to great advantage and
