It's Another Winter Solstice Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Yes, it's another Winter Solstice and expect things to rotate a bit at 2:23pm as we slip into winter and we have our shortest day of the year.  Sunrise was at 6:53am and sunset will be at 4:48pm, making for 9hrs 54mins 29secs of daylight.  So while the sun stalls over the Tropic of Capricorn for a tick, let's see what's happening in the surfline...

We have this photo of LoLa checking out Sapphire (#1) at high tide a couple of days ago.  It was cloudier this morning with about 7 miles visibility, but no threat of rain.  Winds were light offshore and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 53.3 and the water has gone up a smidgen to 62.1.  High tide was at 7:25am +6.6' and low tide follows at 2:34pm -1.1'.  You'd have thought the universe could sync low tide with the sun being at it's greatest tilt from the northern hemisphere, but apparently that's not the way it happens and there's an 11 minute discrepancy.  We do have a persistent WSW swell out of 250º at 3.9' and because it's in our wheelhouse, it's anywhere from 3' to 6' and fair to good...

These two surfers (#2) made it to the cookie exchange at the Waldinger's last Sunday.  On the left we have the ever popular Emma Waldinger and on the right we have the ebullient Hali Honea.  Both alumna of Redondo's surf team, they've carried on their surfing careers in both their college teams (SLO and USC respectively) and in South Bay Boardriders competitions.  Proud to see them doing so well in the water and in school!

An old shot from the Redondo Beach Breakwall by Leroy Grannis (#3).  It's non-other than our buddy Sonny Vardeman, charging on one of his own designs.  At one time Sonny had shops in Hermosa, Huntington and the east coast.  You will immediately appreciate the large surf (winter) and no wetsuit (Brrrrr!)

And a new shot (#4), taken from the bus, of Sapphire and Topaz looking relatively docile a little before mid-day...  The wind has been calm most days recently, allowing for some later, warmer sessions...
