Hug A Tree Wednesday Surf and Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Alrighty then, taking a look at our "StormSurf" forecast (#1) it looks like we're heading for some big surf over the next week!  Our first bump looks to be Friday and Saturday (4th & 5th) and then almost double that on the 9th and 10th.  Thanks to Joey Lombardo for turning us on to the StormSurf.com website.  It's one of those models that allows you to look at several factors and calculate how the swell might manifest itself in your area.  Let's see how that goes...

Another clear day with nary a cloud in sight.  Winds were out of the north by 4.5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was chilly at 48.8º and the water is still 61.9º.  High tide is at 9:14am +6.0' and low tide will be at 4:44pm -0.3'.  We have a WSW swell out of 250º at 3.3' and it was almost twice that big on the outsides at the pier.  There were some thumpers.  As we checked from Torrance to El Porto, Hermosa definitely had the biggest waves.  It just looked like all of the energy was centered there and places like Sapphire were pretty much flat...  Be ready to check it mañana...

Up at Bass Lake (#2) there's not so much as a ripple.  They've let some of the water out of the lake anticipating some snowfall, but so far this year it's been pretty dry.  In past years we would ski Badger Pass the weekend after Thanksgiving because you could always count on the snow.  But slowly over the last 30 years, snows in October have almost stopped and we haven't skied after Thanksgiving in recent memory...

The "Bull Buck Tree" (#3) is 2,700 years old and 246 feet tall.  It's in a little visited area called Nelder Grove just outside of Yosemite Park proper.  We had heard about it for years and never visited, so we took the opportunity to make the trek this year.  It's in an area that was logged and by whatever happy accident it survived being turned into grape stakes and toothpicks.  You can still see some of the stumps that would've supported trees as big as the Bull Buck.  It's 99 feet around at the base (#4) and we didn't have enough bodies to give it a proper hug...
