Romans & Countrymen Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Here we go!  A lot of people bring down shovels to play in the sand.  But Doc ? (#1) has taken to eschewing the use of hardware and has jumped right in to using his ears..  And it appears he's done quite a fine job of it!  Actually, he was coming in and a rogue wave threw him into the washing machine and he got spit out of the spin cycle.  He emerged looking like a wobbly crumb doughnut, with many significant orifices filled with sand...

Cloudless skies with 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were light out of the north by 2 to 3 kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 50.5º and the water is 61.5º.  High tide was at 8:43am +6.1' and low tide was at 4:05pm -0.4'.  We have a SSW swell out of 202º at 3.3' and the surf was a high tide bounced 3' to 4' with occasional larger outsides.  The lefts were the stars of the show and all that training at Saladitas helped...

We were hiking in the mountains South of Yosemite and we saw this sign (#2).  "WHAT TO DO IF YOU ENCOUNTER A LION"

DON'T RUN!  Well, that should be easy enough being paralyzed by fear.  Of course we're not sure that you can run and shit yourself at the same time anyway...

DON'T CROUCH DOWN.   Well okay...  How about a bit of a casual nod in the general direction of the local apex predator?  Don't wink.

HOLD YOUR GUARD, WAVE YOUR ARMS AND SHOUT!   Wait, we have a guard!  Damned right we're holding on to him!  Does he have a sidearm?  We will have him wave the hell out of that thing.  And SHOUT!  We've been doing that since we saw the mountain lion...

KEEP CHILDREN CLOSE AS MOUNTAIN LIONS SEEM PARTICULARLY DRAWN TO THEM.   Well, there's starting to be some possibility of diverting the attention of the beast!

IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN WITH YOU PICK THEM UP.  DO ALL YOU CAN TO APPEAR LARGER.  We're not only appearing larger, we're actually much larger after that Thanksgiving dinner.  Also standing on the children doesn't make you that much larger, you DO have to pick them up...

MAKE PLENTY OF NOISE WHILE YOU HIKE SO AS TO REDUCE THE CHANCES OF SURPRISING A LION.  This is why we never hike without our trombone...

Speaking of hiking, the low afternoon tides this week have made for some great walks beneath the tide line.  They also happen to coincide with the setting sun (#3) to make for a great cap on the day...
