Too Forward Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

No, we don't know what it's supposed to be.  Initially we thought it was a bear, but the snout didn't quite work, kinda like "why the long face?"  Then there was the jacket and the hat.  Bears don't typically wear those, but hell, it's Laughlin...  We thought it might be some kind of wolfhound, but it was a bit paunchy.  Kenny the Jet said he saw one in a jacket once, but never a hat.  Barry Santos thought that the artist was inhibited by the medium and everything got tweaked in the process.  That Barry...

A beautiful winter's morning here in the Southland.  Mostly clear skies and 20 miles visibility.  More than clear enough to see whales and dolphins frolicking in and just beyond the surf line.  Winds were offshore by 2.3kts at checkout and the sea surface was smooth to almost glassy.  The air temp was a brisk 49.3° and the water was 58.1°.  High tide was at 5:45am +5.2' and low tide will be at 1:15pm -0.1'.  We currently have a west swell out of 262° at 3.0' and it's a wally crashy 2' to 3'.  Supposed to be better tomorrow, so we'll go with that...

Next week, Saturday the 11th, is the Hennessey Cup of Surfing.  Come on down and watch some rad prep surfing!

Our second photo really left us puzzled.  It's an ape holding a burning torch.  There were about a dozen of them lining a remote part of the river walk.  They were about 12' tall and made out of fiberglass and painted to look like bronze.  They were just there, no hotel, no signs, no nothing.  They looked like something from "Planet of the Apes."  When we first saw them during the day they were a curiosity.  During the evening they took on a decidedly ominous look and you instinctively quickened your step as you passed.  Only a few still had the molded flames in place.  A primitive race of Laughlanders?  A casino for primates gone belly up?  An abandoned movie set?  And what about the way they're holding the torch?  You hand a monkey a torch and they almost never hold them like that...
