Almost A Torrential Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Since Chacahua faces south, the sun comes up (#1) over on the middle of the bay and sets way over to the right behind the mainland.  Since sunrise was around 6:30am it wasn't that hard to get down and watch the fiery ball make it's morning debut...  If you look closely, you can see about two or three guys out for a morning surf.  Those rocks outside let you know when the big ones are coming for your head...

Is it raining where you are?  Well, about the Southland there are varying amounts of moisture falling from the sky.  We have 3 miles visibility under cloudy rainy skies, although it hasn't really opened up and poured like some advertised.  Winds are out of the SE by 8.3kts and the sea surface has a bit of a light bump.  The air is 57.0 and the water is 60.1.  High tide is at 10:22am +6.2' and low tide will be at 4:49pm -0.8'.  There's a SSW swell out of 198º at 3.6' and it's supposed to double tomorrow.  Right now the surf is a pacific 2', but let's give it a minute...

We stayed in Puerto at "Olas Altas," a really nice place on the Zicatela.  Early on we noticed this square with a circle in the middle and four arrows pointing to the circle (#2).  Landing spot for aliens?  Helicopters?  Best place for a selfie?  Nay, nay...  Turns out this is where they want you to meet in case of an emergency!  That way the building can fall on everyone's head at once, instead of having to search through room after room.  They are on the "Ring of Fire" and "terremotos" are not unheard of...

"To get in PLEASE:  HAND THE HONK"...(#3)  Needless to say we "handed the honk" at every opportunity...  But note:  we did wash our hands afterwards...

Our video clip today is the "Jungle Cruise" through the lagoon to our digs on the edge of the rio and a quick float out to the break.  Within the mangrove swamp are several villages wherein the inhabitants tend toward dark skin and African features.  The story is that during the slave trade in the Americas, a slave ship crashed and the slaves, seeing a golden opportunity, made their way along the coast and ducked into the swamps to avoid detection.  Today they make up the majority of fishermen and the population of this area.

THURSDAY!  Yes, the new Friday for our "Hora Feliz."  5:30pm at Laurel Tavern...
