Mackerel (Scomber Scombrus) Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Not quite sure how we made it through February 29, "Leap Day?"  Is that what we call it?  Seems like we'd have a more elegant solution to the extra day...

We're sitting at "Tio's" after a morning dip and while we're waiting for our eggs, we noticed that all of the flags were upside down.  That is except for the Mexican flag, which you can see on the right flapping gallantly in the breeze.  Right side up...  Our server suggested no explanation...  On a breakfast note, we all ordered different breakfasts.  There was the ever popular "Huevos Rancheros,"  a "Tlayuda," an "Entomatada," and "Chiliquiles."  When the meals arrived the server took a great deal of time making sure we all had the right things.  The only thing was, they all looked alike.  Yeah, well we had to ask, "What's the difference with these dishes?"  The server stood there with her hands behind her back (like all professional waitstaff) and said:  The huevos rancheros are eggs over easy, tortillas, ranchera sauce and rice and beans.  The tlayuda is two eggs, folded tortillas and rice and beans and red sauce.  The entomatada is tortillas, eggs, rice and beans covered in red sauce.  And the chiliquiles are tortilla chips, rice and beans and eggs in green sauce...  Except the sauce was red and not green...  So if you have tortillas, rice, beans, eggs and sauce (red or green)  you can make four Mexican breakfasts pretty much simultaneously...   Don't even ask about burritos...

10 miles visibility this morning and winds were calm at checkout and then ramped up to 6.3kts and bumpy before 8am.  The air temperature was 48.8 and the water is 60.4.  One tide today at 10:02am.  +1.1' low tide and the next high tide is tomorrow at 2:44am!  We have a building SW swell out of 215º and it was 4' to 6' this morning with some gaping cylinders.  Unfortunately, 19 out of 20 were unmakeable...

Sunset on our first night in Puerto Escondido (#2) was a rather spectacular event replete with green flash and some spectacular cloud effects.  The next morning we rose early to check out the scene and Capt. Don Congrejo, our influencer, suggested that Zicatela was not up to our high standards and we should head to Chacahua a day early.  This met with universal approval and the next morning we found ourselves slashing down the carretera...

Happy hour this week will be at the ever popular Greenbelt!  More later (then again, how much do you need...)
