An Abundance Of Caution Friday (the 13th) Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Ok, we've tried to avoid mentioning the Corona Virus because:  1.  You're hearing enough about it everywhere else.  2.  We'd probably be guilty of poking fun at the craziness going on.  3.  We're just superstitious enough to believe that if we make fun of it, we're going to get it as just desserts...  Well, it's become serious enough for the WSL to cancel their first event.  Look at this:
The World Surf League just announced that due to the quickly escalating situation surrounding the COVID-19, all events slated for the month of March will be canceled, including the first stop on the 'CT, the suddenly-ironically-titled Corona Gold Coast Open. The decision came as a preemptive move out of "caution for the safety of our athletes, fans, and staff."

No word on how Corona stock is doing currently...

Gray and raining this morning with 3 miles visibility.  Winds were light offshore and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temp is 53.9 and the water is 59.7.  Low tide was at 6:58am +0.1' and high tide follows at 1:03pm +3.8'.  We have a SSW swell out of 192º at 3.0' and it's 2' and poor to worse at most spots...

Good News / Bad News
Our correspondent Brendan Simmons, sent a photo of an empty freezer case at Trader Joe's that got shared at Happy Hour last night at Laurel Tavern (which, by-the-by, was a rollicking success.)  Admittedly, our curiosity got the best of us and our way home we decided to stop by Trader Joe's in the Riviera Village and check it out first hand.  Let me preface this by saying, if you want to get more than you expected from your Trader Joe's experience, go after you've had a couple (or a few) cocktails.  Priceless.  So, the bad news was that Brendan's photos only told half the story.  Most of the canned goods were gone (photo #1), the freezer section was frozen and empty and potatoes, onions and fresh vegetables had been plucked away.  The good news was that the wine section was fully stocked, causing LoLa to do a little wine-dance in aisle #4.  It looked like people were stocking up for a hurricane!  Why would you hoard toilet paper?  Bottled water was flying off the shelves.  There is NO WATER SHORTAGE.  You turn on the tap and it comes running out like Niagara.  People have just gotten a bit nuts about this...

"Light at the end of the pier."  A brief break in the clouds allowed the sun to stream through and illuminate a rather gray morning...

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it"
