Wait! We're Not Going Too Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S o later today Morgan and Christian will be leaving for their honeymoon (finally!)  It came as quite a shock to the Professor (#1) who asked where they were going and if we could all tag-along, when someone said, "IT'S THEIR HONEYMOON, IT'S JUST FOR THEM!"  Word is they'll be going to Denmark, Ireland and Iceland and we're wondering how the surf is in Iceland, besides freeze-ass cold.  We've asked them to report. S peaking of ,cold, it's not exactly warm here at home.  This morning at checkout the air was 61.9º and the water was 61.9º.  This time of year the water is supposed to be 69.1 not 61.9.  Overcast didn't help the temps and there was a light onshore wind by 1 to 3kts.  High tide was at 8:46am +3.6' and low tide will be at 12:43pm +2.8'.  There's a SSW swell out of 202º at 3.3' and the surf was an interesting 3' and cool if you could find a corner. ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it"

Return Return Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... B oy, the South Bay is sure a great place to visit!  Yeah, we're back and there were some little waves to boot... S ome hazy sun, but nothing like the smoke in Idaho from the fires in Oregon.  15 miles visibility here and light wind in the 2 to 3kt range.  Light texture on the surface.  The air temperature was 60.0ºand the water at the buoy is 61.3 frigid degrees.  It's not that cold in the surf, but it's still 65-66 and you need some rubber to be comfortable.  High tide was at 7:50am +3.3' and low tide is at 11:32am +2.7'.  There's a combo swell out of mainly SSW 195º at 3.0' and that's about what it was for a fun summer morning go-out. W e remember when they'd run some pics in Surfer magazine where they'd jack the image so it would look steeper and more critical.  Here (#1) we have our feeble attempt to make it look better.  It may also have something to do with our photographic prowess?  So does it look better or worse? ✠

Let The Olympics Begin Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Well , it's time for a little track, swimming, volleyball, diving, gymnastics and rowing.  Also a little pomp and circumstance.  Let's see how Paris stacks up to some of the recent games!  We're thinking they'll put on a great show! The big news at home is that the water temp at the buoy is 61.3 degrees!  We've had January's that haven't been that cold.  Hope you didn't hide your 4/3.  Low tide was at 7:41am +0.5' and high tide follows at 2:6pm +4.9'.  No wind at checkout, but it's coming up now.  It's a west swell out of 263 deg true at 3.3' and it's 2' to 3' and a bit sloppy at the pier. Okay, tune in to Paris and let's see how they throw things open! "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

It’s A Scarlett Shmarlett Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... You know how when you jump out of the boat and it suddenly lurches to the other side.  Exhibit A (#1) demonstrates this basic action as LoLa & Scarlett exit the boat post haste.  You might wonder about some of the conditions on and about the lake.  The daily temps have been hanging around the mid-eighties and the water is just about 70.  A little smoky with some of the fires in Oregon wafting across the border.  All-in-all not bad… Meanwhile in Hermosa (the beautiful) Beach our correspondent Doc Scale tells us that it's a bit foggy and damp chill.  Winds are out of the SW by 3kts and there's a bit of texture on the surface.  Low tide was at 7:01am 0.0' and high tide follows at 1:31pm +4.7'.  It's a chilly 64.8 in the surf.  We have a 3.0' SSW swell (203 deg true) and it's looking like 2'and some real skeg draggers.  Speaking of skeg draggers, Doc appears to be doing fine since he catamaraned a landing the other day.  He managed

Nothing Rhymes With Wednesday Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... We've been in close communications with our colleagues on the pier in Hermosa this morning as the fog wafts in and the humidity passes 100%.  Our photo this morning is courtesy of Baron von Aaron Millstein and his roving surf cam.  He overcame the struggle to keep his lens dry and deliver this image (#1) to the group. So you can see the visibility is in the hundreds-of-yards range and the overcast has now fallen to ground level.  Winds remain light onshore and there is a bit of texture when you can see the surf.  Low tide is at 6:22am -0.6' and high tide will be at 12:49pm +4.8'.  We have a SSW swell out of 207 degrees at 2.6' and it might be 2'.  The bad news is that we've had some significant upwelling and the water temperature at the buoy has fallen to an April level of 63.5 degrees.  It's either got to get really sunny or the water better climb out of this hole and get up to more comfortable levels… "When the surf breaks, we

In The Middle Of The Lake Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Water, water everywhere and floating is an option.  Yes, here (#1) we are in the middle of Lake Payette enjoying a morning dip before breakfast or lunch or whatever that meal is we're currently going to celebrate.  Water is 69, air is 82 and the winds are calm. Meanwhile in Hermosa this morning it was a tad foggy and in spots less than 2 miles visibility.  Winds were calm to 4kts out of the SW, while the sea surface is lightly textured.  The water temp keeps fluctuating in a bad way and it got down to 64.8 at the buoy this morning.  Low tide was at 5:45am this morning a -1.0' and high tide will be at 12:12pm +4.3' and filling in all of the interstices very nicely. It's a SSW swell out of 196 degrees at 3.0'and it was 2' to 3' with some interesting sets if you were pure of heart… And don't ask us if you're pure of heart.  That's between you and the cosmos.  You look good to us, but we are famous for making erroneous assumptio

Lost Boys & Co... YES, this kid actually had a tail! (#1).  It was one of those things where you didn't want to stare, but you couldn't stop looking.  You see the most interesting things on the lake.  We'll share a few this week… But DAMN the surf looks good!  The cams are cooking!  Kinda hazy sun and 10 miles visibility.  Water at the buoy is 66.2.  High tide is at 11:37am +4.0' and low tide is at 4:20pm 2.0'.  Winds are out of the west calm to 3kts onshore.  It's a SSW swell at 3.3' and It's looking about 3' with an occasional fatter push on the outside. Right In The Wrong Direction Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Always feels a little disingenuous to be writing the surf report from 300 miles or so from the nearest surf.  But if we're going to let that stop us then we might as well not report on Hawaii, El Salvador or the East Coast.  Also if United Airlines doesn't get it together after their stupendous hack, we may have to Uber back! Looking a bit hazy this morning with 5 miles visibility.  Winds are out of the south by 2 to 3kts and the sea surface is lightly textured.  Some radical tides but not during the day.  It's high tide at 10am 3.4' and low tide follows at 1:54pm 2.5'.  The water temp is 66.9 and has been dropping slightly throughout the morning.  We have a SSW swell out of 209 at 3.9' and it's a pretty solid 3' if you don't mind it a bit cool. "Chiropractor to the Stars" Ed Scale was demonstrating these leg stretches (#1) but for all the world it looked like Rita had relegated him to the corner for a timeout.  What d

The Winner & Still Champion Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Over the years we have been involved with more than a few snot bubble challenges.  Typically it involves laughing so hard that the involuntary expulsion of mucous is quite dramatic.  We would submit James Wheatley's "His beer was in a coozy…" as a prime example.  That year it was the Professor who won with a 2" spheroid that shocked the crew and left a carload of surf gladiators in awe and amazement. However, it is with no lack of pride that we introduce this year's winner, our very own great-granddaughter Rylee Anne Guth, who, in the midst of a cold, sneezed and blew this two and seven eights beauty eclipsing the record by almost an inch.  Congratulations to Rylee and her proud parents! A bit of the foggies this morning with about a mile visibility.  High tide is at 9:27am 3.2' and low tide follows at 1:03pm 2.6', before rocking another high tide at 7:43pm6.1'.  Winds are out of the SW by 3kts and the sea surface has a bit of li

Lost Boys & Co... Heading up to Lake Payette today for some floating time in McCall, Idaho.  Personally, our fave is pushing 8-year old Scarlett into the boat wakes on her foamy surfboard as they break on the sandy shore.  Naturally, our ulterior motive is to get her down to Hermosa and experience some real ocean waves.  Of course, this year the surf would be perfect for her to learn! Meanwhile, there's 10 miles visibility under partly cloudy skies.  Winds are out of the SW by 3rds and the sea surface is lightly textured. Ocean temperature is 68.4 at the buoy.  It's a 3.2' high tide at 8:51am and low tide will be at 12:11pm 2.8'.  We're looking at a 3.9' swell out of the SSW (206) and it's 2' to 3'. If you want to eat like your favorite shaper, you should try this build-your-own burrito (#1) designed by Jose Barahona.  If you want to really kick it into high gear, add jalapeños!  Aye yi yi! Stop Me If You’ve Heard This Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Thank you for your patience at our screed yesterday.  And thank you to Boomfwapa who reminded us that it was Martin Luther King in April 1968, then Bobby Kennedy in June of the same year.  Also Big Daddy for suggesting hazing and bullying as prime culprits in the mental health of some of these folks.  We must say our experience at Redondo High suggests that there is zero tolerance for such activity, but kids do have a propensity to act out with some ugliness.  That being said, we have no inclination to apologize to Dennis Forrel for stuffing him in a trash can… Some texture on the water this morning.  Wind is currently out of the south by 3rds.  Hazy sun and 10 miles visibility.  High tide is at 8:04am and low tide is at 11:11am.  There's a SW swell out of 216 degrees at 3.0' and it's right around that… We saw this sign (#1) in Spyder the other day and we knew it would come in handy sooner or later…. We can't decide at the moment if we wish you wer

THAT Was A Long Weekend Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... It was off to Idaho on Friday evening and early to bed.  Checking the surf Saturday was a remote pro-forma activity.  The cams were small, the wind was onshore and the best news was that the water was 68.2.  In fact Saturday's particulars were pretty close to this morning's. But it got progressively weird from that point on.  Lola came in and announced that Donald Trump had been shot in the ear.  What do you think when someone says that they got shot in the ear?  Like did it go in one and out the other?  Could he now sport that piercing he always wanted?  Did it graze him and make him look like Van Gogh. It grazed him.  By now you have seen the video at least 200 times even if you weren't looking. Welcome to America.  This is the way we do business.  We first experienced it in 1963 with JFK, then Bobby, then Martin.  George Wallace got dinged and was sentenced to a wheelchair.  Then Reagan took a slug almost killing James Brady and left Jodi Foster wit

It’s Eight O’Clock Boise Idaho Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... So here we are at the airport waiting for our transport to Boise, Idaho.  Thumbing through this weeks photos we hit upon this shot of Stutzcanhang hanging.  He turned that into a heels hang and then exited gracefully out the back.  We are so F%#&ing jealous… Gray this morning with a hint of onshore wind that actually died around 8:30am. The air was 66 and the water was 69 and quite nice.  Low tide was at 8am straight up and we dodged the corbina and stingrays for a little low tide amusement.  Swell was out of the SSW by 2.0' and it was that and as much fun as you could expect. We'll be on the road for a couple of weeks, making our way to McCall for a bit of lake action.  The report will be sketchy, but we'll try to amuse you with our notes from the road and some local conditions back at home! The REAL Gidget Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W e got invited to the Malibu Surfing Association's meeting last Tuesday evening (big thanks to Brendan Simmons!)  There were some folks there that we had passing connections with, but we saw LoLa talking to this lady and we thought "Wait a minute!"  It was non-other than Kathy Korner the real-life Gidget!  It was Kathy who began writing about her days at Malibu in her diary and her father who wrote it into a book and then - oh yes - a movie.  There was a panel (including Peter Townend, Jeff Ho, Cassia Meador, Alan Sarlo, Jamie Brisik and Jericho Poplar) who took part in a discussion and during their remarks every one on the panel said they were influenced by her legend and depiction of the surf culture.  How come "Gidget?"  The Mickies, Dora and Muñoz, called her that, short for "Girl Midget."  One thing about our Southern California surf culture, it still remain accessible and immediate.  How often can you meet an icon of a spor

Cross Step Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Drifters Escape Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... A few days ago the waves were small and playful and gave the crew a good chance to show off their foot work.  You got a chance to catch Milly on that little right yesterday and here's Brendan Simmons (#1) showing it off going left.  Gotta be impressed with the subtlety of his approach.  A well planted forward step, stable and up to almost up to the front third of the board.  Cross stepping in the classic manner, unhurried and smooth.  And catch that little gesture with the right hand that makes it look classic and polished!   Again thanks to our photographer Sabrina Coco! M arginally bigger today than yesterday, but foggier and a bit of chill.  Visibility was 2 miles and wind were out of the SW by 0 to 3kts.  The sea surface was smooth.  The air was around 65.0º and the water is 67.1º.  Low tide was at 6:43am -0.3' and high tide will be at 1:21pm +3.9'.  Swell is getting annoyingly south at 196º at .09', but still threw us a couple of feet of wav

Lost Boys & Co... Lost Boys & Co... Elegant and graceful, here (#1) we have Milly Horstman demonstrating the proper method of backside cross-stepping.  Notice how her feet are slightly perpendicular to the board to maintain stability and it just looks good to boot!  This was Saturday and the whole crew was out.  We'll thrill you with some other shots throughout the week!  And a special thanks to our photographer Sabrina Coco, who's stated goal is to be the videographer of the Redondo Surf Team.  She'll be a freshman this year and has some serious photographic skills!  (Take note Coach Avery!) Meanwhile, it was small this morning with some thick air and low overcast causing things to be damp and slick.  7 miles visibility and no wind.  The sea surface was smooth to glassy and the Junior Lifeguards were leaping from the ramparts of the pier.  The air was 64.4º and the water is 66.7º.  Low tide was at 6:00am straight up -0.6' and high tide will be at 12:43pm +3.9'.  It's a piddl

Wooden Men Iron Women Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... H ere (#1) we have our representatives checking out this year 's Iron Man.  Caitlin, Morgan and Brendan made it down to the event so you didn't have to. How many years has this been going on?  A lot of reverse peristalsis on the books... T his morning there were sunny skies and as the morning carried on it got progressively cloudier.  By the time we hit the water things were cooling down considerably.  Winds were onshore by 3 to 5kts and the sea surface was textured.  The air temp was 64.3º and it got down to 60 before it started up again.  High tide was at 10:51am +3.6' and low tide followed at 3:08pm +2.4'.  We have a SSW swell out of 195º at 3.6' and we'll call the surf 3' and a bit wally...  Could be better wind conditions mañana... T omorrow we'll be at Torrance Beach for the annual "South Bay Dozen / Jimmy Miller" lifeguard competitions.  A dozen different events including Dorey Racing will be happening all morning.

Foggust of July Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... P olitics getting you down?  You can always go surfing and forget about all that stuff that's happening on the continent.  Unless you were in the water this morning, then you would have had to do some serious thinking about the viability of the candidates, the electoral process and the role of the courts.  Honestly it was just easier to shoot the pier... D espite the fog (1/4mile visibility), the wind (3 - 5kts out of the WSW) and the tide (High at 9:24am 3.6') the crew got their fair share of waves.  It's a WNW swell swinging between west and south exposure at 2.3' and it was 2' to 3' with some crumbly waist high scooters.  It was Tarsan, Doc and the Professor, descending on Elliot and telling him how the world works.  He may never surf Hermosa again... First Day Of The Second Half Of The Year Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... S o, we've knocked down the first half and let's get ready to push through #2.  We purposely didn't mention that Christmas was six months away on the 25th last month.  It just seemed too mean.  Like telling high schoolers that they have to be back in class the third week in August.  Come on, let's try to stay in the present! H azy sun this morning breaking into a beautiful sunny day.  10 miles visibility and winds out of the SE by 2 to 3kts.  The air temperature3 was 64.5º and the water is 66.5º.  High tide was at 7:12am +3.2' and low tide was at 11:46am +1.9'.  It's a west swell out of 262º at 3.0' and it was about that on the southside of the pier...
