The REAL Gidget Thursday Surf & Culture Report
Lost Boys & Co...
We got invited to the Malibu Surfing Association's meeting last Tuesday evening (big thanks to Brendan Simmons!) There were some folks there that we had passing connections with, but we saw LoLa talking to this lady and we thought "Wait a minute!" It was non-other than Kathy Korner the real-life Gidget! It was Kathy who began writing about her days at Malibu in her diary and her father who wrote it into a book and then - oh yes - a movie. There was a panel (including Peter Townend, Jeff Ho, Cassia Meador, Alan Sarlo, Jamie Brisik and Jericho Poplar) who took part in a discussion and during their remarks every one on the panel said they were influenced by her legend and depiction of the surf culture. How come "Gidget?" The Mickies, Dora and Muñoz, called her that, short for "Girl Midget." One thing about our Southern California surf culture, it still remain accessible and immediate. How often can you meet an icon of a sport?
Overcast this morning with 5 miles visibility. Winds light out of the SSW and the sea surface was a bit tenderized. The air temp was 65.0º and they're calling the water 70.3º. Low tide was at 7:38am +0.6' and high tide follows at 2:36pm +4.1'. West swell out of 260º at 2.6' and it was 2' to almost 3'.
