THAT Was A Long Weekend Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

It was off to Idaho on Friday evening and early to bed.  Checking the surf Saturday was a remote pro-forma activity.  The cams were small, the wind was onshore and the best news was that the water was 68.2.  In fact Saturday's particulars were pretty close to this morning's.

But it got progressively weird from that point on.  Lola came in and announced that Donald Trump had been shot in the ear.  What do you think when someone says that they got shot in the ear?  Like did it go in one and out the other?  Could he now sport that piercing he always wanted?  Did it graze him and make him look like Van Gogh.

It grazed him.  By now you have seen the video at least 200 times even if you weren't looking.

Welcome to America.  This is the way we do business.  We first experienced it in 1963 with JFK, then Bobby, then Martin.  George Wallace got dinged and was sentenced to a wheelchair.  Then Reagan took a slug almost killing James Brady and left Jodi Foster with one less admirer.  Then in 1975, Redondo's own Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, pulled out a semi-automatic pistol and took aim at Gerald Ford.  If that wasn't enough, a month later Sarah Jane Moore got off a shot and missed and was quickly subdued by bystanders.

And now Donald Trump.  Do you wonder why normal people don't go into politics?  This is one of several perfectly good reasons to avoid public service and maybe notoriety in general (John Lennon comes to mind.)

We're not gun slingers.  We have our opinions about AR-15's, bump-stocks and big magazines (although if the guy that shot at Trump had Lee Harvey Oswald's Manlicher-Carcano, we'd be talking about Donald in the past tense).  Face it, there are a lot of crazy people out there.  If they are one in a million, there are 300 of them running around.

So, be nice to people.  Reduce the number of loners.  Go surfing…
