Frijoles Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Here we see the Professor outside Oscar's ding repair shop, up the arroyo from the beach.  You'll notice that the decor primarily consists of boards that were beyond Oscar's capabilities.  The funny thing is that you see benches, fences and furniture made from broken surf boards because there are so many of them there!  Not that other construction is deluxe.  Pic #2 is the wall a couple of doors down from Don's place.  It consists of re-bar enforced concrete slabs slid into I-shaped posts.  The heat and moisture eventually pops the concrete off of the thin surface and exposes the metal, which then rusts and falls apart.  So, how do they repair something like that?  With bamboo of course!

Here in the Southbay this morning we have partly cloudy skies with 20 miles visibility.  It's supposed to cloud up during the day, with a chance of rain tomorrow.  Winds were offshore this morning by 7.3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a chilly 48.4° and the water was 58.8°.  Low tide was at 7:00am +0.3' and high tide will follow at 1:12pm +3.0'.  We have a west swell out of 272°, registering 4.3'.  We're calling it 2' to 4' and there's really a lot of difference depending on where you're checking it.  Early wasn't an advantage this morning, but you had to catch it before the wind came up.  Topaz was okay, Sapphire was small and Torrance was walled up.  Check it in the morning and try to beat the wind and the rain!

Pic #3 probably isn't what you think it is.  It's not the sunset nor is it the sunrise.  It's actually the moon rising over the mountains between Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido.  It has that red color because of all of the chaff and rubbish they burn.  It was pretty spectacular.  We got this view from O.D.'s house high on the ridge above town.  He built this three story, palapa roofed structure that has an amazing 360° view.  The best room in the house is the bathroom.  Two of the four walls are glass, so when you shower you can see the entire countryside.  You're so far away from the next neighbor that no one can see you!

Finally, we have the flier for the Rookie-fest at the Lanakila Outrigger Club.  It's on Sunday at 9am.  Sounds like a lot of fun and we're betting that Poseur will be there to show you the right end of the paddle!
