Windswept Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

One of our cultural diversions down in Puerto was to visit the local "free" graveyard.  If you get buried in town, they want to charge you something like $200.  But if you head up to this area, you stake out your plot and proceed to construct your own memorial.  There were some great examples of primitive funereal art mixed with classic Mexican motifs.  Don told us that in this area of Mexico, they really go all out for the "Dia de los Muertos."  You could tell from the ornamentation and elaborate displays, that these were works of respect and love.

Okay, okay - you can turn off the wind machine now!   Three days and it's still blasting away.  Like yesterday, we have 25 to 30kt winds out of the west.  The sea surface is all white caps and chop and everything is very disorganized.  20 miles visibility and partly cloudy skies.  The air temperature at checkout was 48.9° and the water is 57.2°.  High tide was early at 5:47am +4.7' and low tide will be at 12:55pm -0.1'.  The 46221 Buoy is reading a west swell out of 269° at 6.6'.  We're calling it 6' to 7' and it's rough and crazy.

Finally, we noted with some sadness the passing of a rather young Lost Boy...  No, not Willy Davis, but him too...

LOS ANGELES – Corey Haim, a 1980s teen heartthrob whose career was blighted by drug abuse, has died. He was 38.

Haim died early Wednesday at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, Los Angeles County coroner's Lt. Cheryl MacWillie said.

"As he got out of bed, he felt a little weak and went down to the floor on his knees," Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said. His mother called paramedics.

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."
