Windmill Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Hey, when you hang with Birdie (like Jack Bauer,) you'd better be ready for some full-on excitement...  But first, let's check out the surf...

Another gorgeous spring morning, with the same hazy sunrise as yesterday and 15 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 1.9kts at checkout time and the sea surface was glassy to smooth all morning.  The air temperature was 56.3° and the water is getting the message as it inched up to 58.3°.  High tide was at 4:30am +4.8' and low tide will be at 12:16pm -0.2'.  Don't worry, there'll be lots of minuses this week!  The buoy was reading a 3.6' swell out of 210° SSW and we were calling it 3' to almost 5' at the Cove.  When the Professor paddled out there were 5 guys sitting right in the middle of the Cove.  He decided that, with the tide going down he'd sit over at Boneyards and see if he could sneak some of those wally-rights into the rocks.  Well, children - it worked!  By the time Birdie got out, the Professor had sneaked a bunch of those rights and now he and Birdie proceeded to nab a bunch more of them on that side.  The crowd fluctuated between the original 5 (that included Bredesen) and about 15.  But they were all spread out and the vibe was fun and everyone was enjoying the morning.

So Birdie's been asking us if we wanted to see the set of the TV show "24."  Of course we said, "Yes."  He said that one of his old surfing buddies, "Dugald" was in charge of buying all the props and set dressing and he could get us a tour.  So yesterday morning (after Birdie got in a few waves at Knob Hill,) they headed for a secret location in the far reaches of the San Fernando Valley.  Dugald met us and in the tradition of all Hollywood bigwigs offered us toasted English muffins and peanut butter.  Pretty yummy!  He then gave us the tour of the carpentry shop and some of the sets.  If you're a fan of the show, you'd recognize a bunch of the sets.  They spent nearly their whole wad on the United Nations set and there are some of the cool CTU sets and the tunnel between Roosevelt Island and the United Nations.  These sets were really incredible - they were more like feature sets, than TV series sets.  But of course the best part was on the way back we met Marianna and Amy and they gave us each a "24" pin for visiting.  We felt pretty damned special!  So here's the trivia question for the day:  What's the difference between props and set dressing?  The answer is a prop is anything the actor touches or uses.  Set dressing is all the rest of the environment.

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."
 The Professor!!
